Day 4

Subject: Are you looking after your list, [firstname]?

Hi [firstname],

One phrase you'll hear over and over again in IM is: The money's in the list!

And you know what?

It's true!

It goes deeper than that, though.

The REAL money is in your RELATIONSHIP with your list, so it's vitally important that you e-mail your list regularly so people don't forget about you. Like the old saying goes: Out of sight, out of mind.

Some people say you should e-mail your list every day, but personally I think that's too often and can lead to you being regarded as a “spammer”. OK, I know I'm sending YOU an e-mail every day this week, but this is an e-course not a regular mailing.

As a general rule, you want people to look forward to your messages and think: Ah, another message from [firstname], let's open it. Not: Oh no, not him/her again! Press the delete button.

Generally, two or three mailings a week is fine.

In addition to just sending out e-mails advertising your latest offer, you should also send out e-mails giving your list members some useful information; information they can use (for free).

I know it's an anathema to some people to give stuff away for free, but there are sound principles for doing so. In particular it helps to build trust and provides demonstrable proof that you know what you're talking about. In fact, most IM “gurus” recommend your ratio of free info to advertisements should be something in excess of 3:1; that is, you send at least 3 e-mails of useful information for every one message that's purely sales in nature.

Regardless of how often you mail your list, avoid the temptation to treat it like a cash cow and “milk it”. Your e-mail list is your most precious IM business asset. Treat it with the respect it deserves.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
